My journey into natural healing started a very long time ago. It actually started because my son, who was 4 at the time had severe ear infections. We were going to the doctor all the time. He was so bad that the doctors put him on prophylactic antibiotics, meaning that he took them to prevent an ear infection. By the time he was 4, his ear infections were immune to most antibiotics. When a doctor actually tells you that there are no antibiotics left to try, it gets scary. That is what pushed me to start researching other ways to heal him. As I studied ways to help cure ear infections without antibiotics, I learned a great deal. One of the first vitamins I learned about was vitamin C. I can remember thinking, why didn't anybody tell me this before?
What I learned is that vitamin C is one of the most important vitamins for the immune system. Without it, your body can't heal itself. I also learned that humans don't synthesize it, like most animals do. Have you ever wondered why your dog or cat rarely get sick? They make their own vitamin C. I wish I did. Since we don't, that means that we need to eat it every day. This is a water soluble vitamin, so we can't store it in our bodies. On average, we get about 80-100 mg per day, and that is enough to keep us from getting scurvy, but is that really enough? Personally, I don't think it is enough to keep our immune system running smoothly. Our immune system is always seeking and destroying invaders, and needs to be working well to keep us from getting sick. Taking a supplement in the form of a good multivitamin is probably a good idea.
This vitamin is also used in making collagen, which holds our body together. There is also research that shows it helps the body make serotonin, the hormone that helps us feel good. It is a good antioxidant, and helps our body fight the damage from free radicals.
I learned that when I was sick, I needed a lot of vitamin C. The RDA for this vitamin is 60 mg, but when you are sick, you need a few thousand a day. At least 1000 mg with each meal. That will help the duration of your sickness to be shorter. It also helps the symptoms of the common cold.
Lately I have been doing some research on cancer therapies, and there is a protocol that many use with vitamin C. Some people can go to a natural practitioner and get IV's of vitamin C, but that may be hard to find and expensive. There are protocols listed in cancer literature, and if you are interested just message me and I can show you the websites. It does make sense though, because if our immune system was up to par, then we wouldn't have cancer cells growing in the first place. Cancer is just mutated cells, and it is up to our immune system to hunt them down and destroy them. When our system is weak, the cells do not get destroyed and grow to form tumors.
We all know that citrus fruits are loaded with vitamin C, but there are many other sources as well. Some of them include bell peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, kiwis, papayas, turmeric, garlic, and spinach. What we know is that fruit and veggies are the best things on the planet to eat, so try to incorporate them more into your diet.
Assignment for this week would be:
- If you don't think you are getting enough vitamins and minerals, look for a supplement.
- Try to replace a carbohydrate (like bread, cake, cookies, etc), with a good veggie or fruit.
- One thing we have been doing at night, for our dessert fix is making a fruit smoothie. My youngest daughter does it almost every night. She fills the bottom of the blender with spinach, then adds frozen blueberries, cherries, raspberries, strawberries, and pineapples. Then she adds coconut or almond milk, and blends it all up. She adds a dropperful of liquid stevia, and some lemon essential oil (it takes away the bitter flavor of the greens, and adds a nice lemony flavor). It is like having sweet treat at night, and is good for you too! If you have kids, try it and see if they like it.
