The last macro-nutrient that I need to talk about here is FAT. This nutrient has been so vilified in our country that you would think it was poison. So we avoid it like the plague. There is a low-fat version of every food out there that you can buy, and it is deceptive and damaging to our health. I will say that there are good fats and bad fats, and we will get into that at the end of this article, but we need fats in our diet. Let me explain why.
First of all, for those of us who are trying to lose weight, eating fat makes us feel fuller longer. It takes longer to digest, and so we are not hungry right away. If we are not hungry, we will not eat as much. Secondly, fat is important to help us get our fat soluble vitamins; A,D,E, and K. Did you realize that those vitamins will not get into your body without fat? They attach themselves to fat and then pass through your intestines. A study done tested the amount of vitamins absorbed from a salad. One group ate the salad with no dressing. One group ate the salad with low-fat dressing, and the third group ate the salad with regular dressing. After eating they were tested to see who absorbed the most vitamins. Group one absorbed NOTHING. What good was it for them to even eat the stuff. The second group absorbed some, and the third group absorbed the most. The lesson here is to go ahead and enjoy your salad with regular dressing!
Here is the important part of this article, what fats should you consume. Let us talk about the good fats. Only use butter, coconut oil, and olive oil. They are the only oils you should ever cook with. Let me explain why. Corn and Canola oil are made from GMO corn and canola. They are filled with glyphosate, the component in Round-up, and have been proven to be dangerous to our health. Please stop cooking with them this week. If you have any Trans-fats in your house, please throw them away. They are margarine, crisco, cool whip, just to name a few. These are liquid oils that have had hydrogen added to them to make them solid. When they enter your body, your body can't digest them and they stay in the form they are in. There have been studies that show that these nasty fats attach themselves to our cells and "coat" them, so nutrients can't get in. Studies have linked these dangerous fats to diabetes because the fat is coating the cells, not allowing insulin to get to them. Please do not get fooled by the labels on fake butter, saying they are not trans-fats. I have learned that if the serving size is small, they can say there is no trans-fats in the food. Please do not buy butter/canola oil mixes. Do not buy anything except REAL butter. Do not buy cool whip, it is better to go for the whipped cream. Do not buy anything except whole milk. I could do a whole lesson on why skim milk is bad for you, but do not have the time.
Remember we have learned that carbs make us fat, NOT FAT. The body does not turn fat into fat, it is already fat! It does not go into our cells and make us fat. There is an argument that is raises cholesterol, but we will get to that later.
The assignment this week:
Ditch the corn and canola oil.
Ditch the margarine, and all trans-fats
Please from now on use butter, coconut, or olive oils to cook with.
This is not a bad assignment, and trust me, it is definitely better for your health!
