What's in Your Toothpaste?

When I was a small child, I loved to brush my teeth.  I did it several times a day, and apparently since I did it so often my mother was concerned that I was using too much toothpaste.  She was probably concerned because she thought I was wasting it, not because she thought it was bad for me.

After she told me to stop, I guess I got really upset, because after that I didn't want to brush at all, and then when I went to the dentist for the first time, (I was about 9), I had 17 cavities.  Oh, I remember that well, because I was going to the dentist for months trying to get them all fixed.  After that I never had a good check-up, I always had cavities. And of course I learned to hate the dentist.

Fast forward to having kids.  When we first had kids, I didn't know much about healthy living.  We were the typical American family who just bought things thinking they were safe or else they wouldn't sell them.  My oldest son went to the dentist and had crummy teeth like his mom.  I was upset because I knew what it was like.  My second son also started with many cavities.  Of course we all brushed at the time with the typical normal fluoride toothpaste, but it didn't seem to help very much.

As time went on, I began to give my kids vitamins.  A lot of them! Probably 2-3 times the dosage that was on the bottle, and something amazing happened.  My kids stopped getting cavities.  When our third was born she started using vitamins as soon as she could eat them.  She only has one cavity, and she is 16.  My sons began to get check-ups with no cavities.  I was beginning to see a correlation.

But at this time I also started to learn about the dangers of toothpaste.  Dangers of toothpaste, you ask, what am I talking about?  Read the following taken from Dr. Mercola's website.
  • Fluoride is a toxic industrial waste product, which may also be contaminated with lead, arsenic, radionucleotides, aluminum and other industrial contaminants. The fluoride added to municipal water supplies is not pharmaceutical grade.
  • Twenty-three studies from four countries indicate that even moderate exposure to fluoride lowers IQ.
  • The daily dose of fluoride recommended by the American Dental Association results in the same level of fluoride in your blood shown to cause an 8-point drop in IQ.
  • Poison control should be called if you swallow a quarter milligram of fluoride from toothpaste. Meanwhile just ONE glass of water can contain this amount of fluoride.
  • To remain within "safe" limits, you'd have to use such a small amount of fluoridated toothpaste that one tube would last you several years.
There has actually been deaths where kids have swallowed the fluoride treatments at their dentist office.  After learning about this, I stopped allowing the dentist to give my kids fluoride treatments.  I also stopped buying toothpaste with fluoride in it.  But you may wonder about my kids check-ups, did they get worse?  No, they didn't.  They still had great teeth.

But there are other dangers lurking in your toothpaste besides fluoride.  It is called Sodium lauryl sulfate, or sometimes it is sodium laureth sulfate.  Let us see what this chemical does:  (Also taken from Dr. Mercola's website)
Can 16,000 Studies About SLS Be Wrong?

According to the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep: Cosmetic Safety Reviews,6 research studies on SLS have shown links to:
  • Irritation of the skin and eyes
  • Organ toxicity
  • Developmental/reproductive toxicity
  • Neurotoxicity, endocrine disruption, ecotoxicology, and biochemical or cellular changes
  • Possible mutations and cancer
If you visit the SLS page on the Environmental Working Group's (EWG) website,6 you will see a very long list of health concerns and associated research studies. In fact, you will also see their mention of nearly 16,000 studies in the PubMed science library (as well as their link to that list) about the toxicity of this chemical. There are clearly grounds for concern about using products containing this agent. Yet skeptics abound, claiming that these concerns are overblown and unfounded. It's no wonder that consumers are completely confused about just how much risk this chemical poses. Since most of the research studies are done on SLS itself—not on products containing it—the EWG states:
"Actual health risks will vary based on the level of exposure to the ingredient and individual susceptibility."

So what are we supposed to do about this?  There are toothpastes in the market you can buy, usually at health food stores, or stores like Whole Foods that sell products without nasty ingredients.  But Young Living also makes a few really great toothpastes that you can choose from, without these ingredients and actually containing additional good ingredients.
